Commission: Left Coast Chamber Ensemble
Instrumentation: violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet
Duration: 8 minutes
Program Information:
After looking at numerous pictures and online videos of Cornelia Parker’s work, Anti-Mass, I cannot help but find that the work reminds me of an implosion suspended in time. Since the shards exist only in a box, it is difficult to discern if the shards are a result of an implosion or explosion, therefore the title is a portmanteau of the the words implosion and explosion. Each shard is interpreted as a motif, and the oboist plays the game of trying to fit the puzzle together. “can you see it?”, the bat-shit crazy oboe ‘cadenza’ is the oboist’s interpretation of the pre-im/exploded source.
Premiere: May 29 2015 | Left Coast Chamber Ensemble | deYoung Museum, San Francisco, CA
