Described as 'the future of composing' (The Straits Times, Singapore) and 'a talent with great potential' (An Tuireann Arts Center, Scotland), Emily Koh (b.1986) has been honored with scholarships, awards from the Asia-Pacific Contemporary Music Festival, TIMF Academy, Peabody Conservatory, and the National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as commissions from the NUS Arts Festival, ArtsSphere Chamber Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra Society (Singapore), and the Singapore Lyric Opera Children's Chorus amongst others. Her works have been performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra Society, Asian Festival Orchestra, Sentieri Selvaggi, Signal Ensemble, the Next Mushroom Project, and NUS Symphony Orchestra amongst others, at various venues in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

Most recently, Emily was selected to be the Singapore representative at the Asian-Pacific Contemporary Music Festival 2009, where her work III. Als Leben was performed by the Asian Festival Orchestra. She was also the youngest of ten composers selected in an international call for scores to participate in the week-long Sentieri Selvaggi Composition Masterclass with Ivan Fedele in Milan, Italy. In 2008, Emily was also awarded a scholarship to attend the first international TIMF Academy, where she studied with Gerhard Muller-Hornbach and Unsuk Chin. She has also participated in the 4th Thailand Composition Festival with Chinary Ung, Mixes – a week-long gamelan course in Bali, Indonesia and the 19th Takefu International Composition Workshop in Fukui, Japan, where she studied with Toshio Hosokawa, Hiroyuki Itoh and Hitomi Kaneko.

Upcoming commitments include a collaborative project titled 'Play!', with visual and community artist, Lindsey Bailey, from the Maryland Institute of the Arts, a joint commission by the Philharmonic Orchestra Society and Singapore Dance Theatre celebrating the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's The Firebird, as well as a commission from the Singapore Lyric Opera Childrens' Chorus. Her new opera scene Generations will also be staged and performed as part of the Opera Department's Opera Etudes Program.

Besides composing, Emily is an avid double bassist and music educator. She is a founding member of d'bassists, the only double bass ensemble based in Singapore, and often performs contemporary music for double bass. Emily had previously taught music theory and history at Temasek Junior College (Singapore), and double bass in various school bands and orchestras. She had also given pre-concert talks and seminars at various concert venues, schools, libraries and museums. She currently teaches 6th, 7th and 8th graders from the Saint Loyola Academy (Baltimore, MD) under the Junior Bach Program, and also maintains an active studio of composition, music theory and double bass students.

A recipient of a full scholarship, Emily is currently completing her Master of Music degree in composition at the Peabody Conservatory, where she is a student of Kevin Puts. In addition, she is also pursuing another masters degree in music theory pedagogy. She graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Music (honors) degree in composition from the studio of CheeKong Ho, and as valedictorian of her class. Emily also holds Licentiate and Associate diplomas in music theory, criticism and literature from the Trinity College of Music, London, as well as a diploma in double bass performance from the Royal Schools of Music, London.
